Whenever I talk to a church or university class about the work I do seeking spiritual meaning in literature and culture, I tell a personal story from the Fall of 2001. I was sick in those days, suffering from chronic depression so extreme that I could hardly get out of bed, and if you’d asked me if I’d still be alive to see 2002, I would not have given you good odds.
